Books Not Bans
Books Not Bans is a program initiated and sponsored by Fabulosa Books that sends boxes of LGBTQ+ books to LGBTQ+ organizations in conservative parts of America, places where bigoted politicians are demonizing and banning books with LGBTQ+ affirming content.
The program rolled out in May of 2023 and has been tremendously successful, earning a writeup in the Bay Area Reporter and receiving many heartfelt thank yous from recipients. Boxes have gone to an LGBT-affirming charter school in Alabama, an unaffiliated trans* support group in North Dakota, a Gay Straight Alliance in South Carolina, and LGBT Centers in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama, and South Carolina.
Every box we send starts out as a query: we first find community groups and ask if they want books, then ask who their primary audience is so we can tailor the titles we send to their needs. (This is actually a lot of work and we'd like to thank Becka, our events coordinator for doing it!) Every box contains 20 or so books written by people representing a wide range of ethnicities and sexual identities chosen from a list of 65 Fabulosa best-sellers.
So far been entirely funded by Fabulosa customers (with a little help from Fabulosa). The store displays a description of the project and allows customers to either make contributions or purchase books which we can send for them. We've also invited two other bookstores to participate, and are coordinating so they send additional boxes. The list of books offered can be viewed at the end of this document. We are focusing on books for adults, tweens, and teens.
